We'll let them continue this year, and no doubt it will get noisy with chicks, but then we'll get the chimney properly capped. In a previous home (rented) we had the awful experience of birds falling down the chimney and getting stuck. As the chimney was blocked by a fixed gas fire we could do nothing quickly to help and it was agonising spending days listening to the struggle. Finally the landlord did but a mesh cover on. We don't want that again!
It seems we have jackdaws (or could be rooks) nesting in one of the main house chimneys. Luckily it is not an active chimney, but one to an unused fireplace in our bedroom. Hence we have been hearing them loudly on our roof in the mornings with the chimney acting as a sound tube. This week our neighbour Ann mentioned she'd seen them them coming and going with twigs and right "on cue" they performed for me to see. The cottage will get a great view!
