About a year or so ago we started promoting a new service to our guests. Somerset Local Food Direct have been leading the organisation of farmer's markets around Somerset for some years. And they have generally been very successful. We have excellent ones in Axbridge and Wells. They have then applied their knowledge of local food producers to a sister project: to basically deliver local food to your door. Not a organic veg box system - in fact better because you order exactly what you want from their on-line shop. They have a wide range of lovely produce and deli goods, all produced locally. A lot of it is organic.
They then deliver the goods to us and as they deliver on a Friday for those arriving end or week or on - say - a Saturday this is perfect timing to get it in for your stay. To make it easier still, for self-catering cottages such as us they have our address and details on their system so one click and you are already pointing the order to be delivered to us. We should point out that we get no benefit from this it is purely to help our guests.
The good mostly arrive in re-used thermally insulated boxes to ensure everything stays cool or cold or frozen, and if it works we're happy to stock it all in the cottage fridge for your arrival.
The result is that you can not worry about getting stocked up with food to come to the cottage, or worry about rushing off to the shops to get food on arrival. And everything you get is sourced locally so it not only helps the small producers but also means no ridiculous food miles trucking stuff in from distant parts or abroad.
And indeed whilst at first we saw this as a good thing for our guests, now we're using it too for some of our food shopping. And we highly recommend it. Check out the link for the cottage here:
