Shopping guide

Cheddar has most of the shops and facilities you will need. Either up and around the Gorge, or down in the main village.

Food Stores

Sainsbury's
Newly opened (replacing the previous Budgens) this is a mid-range store with almost everything you need, including a fair Sainsbury Organic (SO) range.

Costcutter
A small but well stocked convenience store, very convenient to Gorge View Cottage - just 5 minutes walk, if that, cutting through West Lynne to the Tweentown service station. The have organic milk sourced from the organic herd at Bruton.

Spar
A reasonable store at the Shell garage on the Axbridge side of the village. This is where you can get logs during winter.

Specialist shops
The Gorge has a number of specialists shops including:
  • Hansford's Deli, just around the corner, offers a good range of local sourced foods and produce, including made-to-order sandwiches, cakes, quiches, coffee, clotted cream, hand made ice creams from the Somerset Levels, jams, chutneys and way more. They also have a little café. Now they also supply organic milk in refillable bottles and that's our "go to" now for milk.
  • The Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company (the only cheddar produced in Cheddar plus a range of locally produced farmhouse cheeses and relishes)
  • The Original Cheddar Cheese Company (the oldest cheese shop and selling a big range of cheeses
  • Cobbs of Cheddar
A newly opened shop and deli in the centre of the village by the old cross. Very popular butcher Adrian Cobb set this up and is helped on the deli and general groceries side by his wife Estelle.
  • Thatcher's Cider outlet shop (just the other side of the hills in Sandford). Get there  by bike and riding the Strawberry line. Perfect for the new Thatchers Railway Inn pub too.

Farmers Markets

We have some great farmer's markets selling the best of local produce. Always busy and bustling. And often in wonderful market square settings.

Axbridge  First Saturday of every month; 09.00-13.00
In the medieval square. A 30 minute easy cycle ride from Cheddar, along the reservoir. Why not stay for lunch at one of the pubs on the market square.

Wells  Every Wednesday; 09.00-14.30
In the market square close to the Cathedral. Also on Saturdays a good market but not a full Farmers' Market
